July 1, 2008 GOSHEN, INDIANA – New World Arts will present the classic Thornton Wilder play Our Town on July 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 at their mainstage in downtown Goshen. Directed by Laura Gouin, the production is set in a fictional New England town at the turn of the twentieth century and follows the lives of two young people, played by Jaron Kennel and Jessica Hage.

An unusual choice for New World Arts, which has become known within the community for choosing experimental and new works, Gouin insists Our Town is the perfect choice for this season.

“New World Arts Season Ten is focused on community, how could we not do Our Town?” asks Gouin. “And as far as experimental plays go, this one is hugely experimental. We’re performing it with no set, no props, and universal costumes. It’s a big challenge for our actors.”

“And the message of the play is poignant. It speaks of the beauty of life and asks us to take the time to look at one another and connect,” continues Gouin.

Written as a response to contemporary theater of the time and featuring minimal scenery, props and costume changes, Our Town relies heavily on pantomime and dialogue. Since its premiere in 1938, Our Town has become one of the most frequently produced plays from an American playwright.

There will also be a student juried art show focusing on the theme “Our Town” open to all middle and high school students in Elkhart County. There will be an opening night reception on Friday July 18 at 7:00 p.m. with cash awards being given to the top three artists. All accepted art work will be on display during the run of Our Town. Cash prizes for the top three artists have been generously donated by Goshen Community Bank. For information on submitting your art work for consideration, please call 574-975-0311 or email info@newworldarts.org
To make advance reservations, call (574) 975-0311. Advance reservations will be closed on performance dates. On performance dates, tickets may be purchased at the box office a half hour before curtain. For more information, please visit www.newworldarts.org.
GOSHEN, Ind. — New World Arts opens their first ever improvisation series, Survive This! Improv Reality TV Style.

See your favorite reality TV characters (or rather, our version of them), trying to survive on our improv stage. In the vein of Whose Line is it Anyway, this series will take a humorous look at reality TV and why we are so addicted to it. With immunity, double elimination, and all the things we both love and hate about reality TV, this series promises to be an hour of laughter and fun. And you, the audience, will get to vote off one of the improv artists every night. The series will end with a showdown between the final two, with a little help from their original cast members. Your vote matters. Come decide who will Survive This.

*Adult humor, show not recommended for those under the age of 17.

Cast includes Goshen, Elkhart, and South Bend residents: Steve Freeto, CJ Irelan, Jesse Johnson, Leah Morena, Adam Miller, Aaron Nichols, Drea Novotny, and Mark Yoder.
GOSHEN, Ind. — New World Arts opens the second show of their season ten with Dirty Hands by Jean-Paul Sartre.

One of Sartre’s lesser known works, Dirty Hands calls into question what it means to be a patriot or terrorist in a time of war.

The play, set in the semi-mythical land of Illyria, centers around Hugo, an idealistic and passionate young man who is frustrated by the corruption of his world. He joins the “party” to combat these wrongs and finds himself on a difficult assignment. Will he be able to dirty his hands for a cause in which he believes so strongly? And what about the party leader Hoederer who as a realist, believes it’s far easier to change the system then to change the people?

“This play is very timely considering the state of the world,” says Geoffrey Owens (playing Hoederer). “We live in a world of shoot first and damn the questions. Unfortunately in such a world, the merits of any particular argument are secondary to how fanatically its followers adhere to it.”

“With New World Arts milestone season focused on community, this play is a perfect fit, says Artistic Director Laura Gouin. “In Dirty Hands, we see a war torn country where people are separated by their ideals. Each struggles to be heard while desperately trying to find a community and a home for their ideals.”

Performances of "Dirty Hands" at New World Arts are scheduled for April 18, 19, 25, 26 at 8:00 p.m. & April 20, 27 at 3:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 general admission, $10 for students and seniors.
GOSHEN, Ind. – New World Arts in downtown Goshen brings back its semi-formal concert series: Live, by presenting local musician Josh Nisley (Middlebury, Ind.) on April 5. The concert series, begun by New World Arts in 2006, offers a more formal, candle-lit evening of music, as well as complementary dessert, tea, and coffee.

A self-described “rhythmic storyteller” and alternative folk/rock artist, Nisley approaches his work with a sensitivity towards personal connection and human experience. “I really see my music as a sort of in-depth explanation of events that we all go through,” he said, adding that, “I think we all have moments where we are just muted, speechless. I hope that each of my songs will be the words to fill the silence to someone.”

Playing at New World Arts, Nisley contributes to an artistic community already rich with experiences of human connection. “Josh approaches music in the same way that New World Arts approaches the thought-provoking theatre we have become known for,” said New World Arts Events Coordinator Cassie Greer. “His attention to communal experience and desire to provide a voice for the voiceless makes Josh an especially fitting performer during our current, community-focused Season Ten.”

Live, featuring Josh Nisley will be running one night only, April 5, at 8:00 p.m., with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 General Admission, $10 for Students and Seniors, and include desserts and hot beverages along with the show. Tickets may be reserved in advance until Friday April 4th by calling (574) 975-0311; additional available tickets will be sold at the door at 7:30 p.m. on the evening of the show.

GOSHEN, Ind. — New World Arts hosts a V-Day 2008 benefit performance of The Vagina Monologues by Eva Ensler.

V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sexual slavery.

Proceeds from these performances of The Vagina Monologues will go to the V-Day 2008 Spotlight: Women of New Orleans and the Elkhart County Women's Shelter.

"The Vagina Monologues create a safe environment where the vagina, women, and violence against women can be discussed and change can start to happen," says benefit organizer and Goshen College student Deane Binde. This student initiated production will highlight performances by students and local actresses of all ages.

"While this isn't a New World Arts mainstage production, the mission of V-Day fits right in with our season mission of building a community through theatre. A community of safety, love, and respect for each other," says Artistic Director Laura Gouin.

Performances of "The Vagina Monologues" at New World Arts are scheduled for March 21st; curtain times at 8 & 10 p.m. Ticket prices are $10 general admission, $5 for students and seniors. New World Arts extends the run of Marisol for a 3rd weekend

GOSHEN, Ind. — New World Arts exciting Season Ten begins with a bang as their opening show is extended to a 3rd weekend in order to accommodate all who would like to see the production.

New World Arts opens its historic Season Ten with a reprise from its very first season: "Marisol" by José Rivera. Originally performed to sold out audiences at the theatre ten years ago, "Marisol" depicts a world beginning to fail and slowly deteriorate. When New York City resident Mariol Perez learns that angels are planning celestial war in order to save the world, she is set on a unavoidable journey to find faith, security and hope while the world, rent apart, is seemingly bereft of any.

In an election year where four out of five Americans are seeking change in government, the play could not come at a more important time. Rivera, most well-known for his screenplay "The Motorcycle Diaries," references the genre of magical realism, describing a need for change and revolution through spectacle, through grand imagery and through metaphor.

"It's obvious this play resonates with the community," says Laura Gouin, Artistic Director. "After several sellout shows, we had to extend the production to a 3rd weekend in order to get everybody in who wants to see it. This makes for a great start to our milestone season ten."

The reprise of "Marisol" comes as New World Arts begins it's tenth season exploring the relevance and importance of local and global communities, and how each shapes the people that exist within it. "'Marisol' questions the validity of the powers that be and asks us to take a close look at the societal structures we prop up with our belief," said Falcòn.

Extended performances of "Marisol" at New World Arts are scheduled for March 7-8; curtain times at 8 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 general admission, $10 for students and seniors. New World Arts begins Season Ten with magical epic: Marisol

GOSHEN, Ind. — Apples and coffee are extinct, common rainwater turns skin bright red, and Earth's moon is lost in the orbit of Jupiter.

New World Arts opens its historic Season Ten with a reprise from its very first season: "Marisol" by José Rivera. Originally performed to sold out audiences at the theatre ten years ago, "Marisol" depicts a world beginning to fail and slowly deteriorating.

"I have been involved with this script twice before, and I find it to be one of the most fascinating I have ever directed," said director Bryan Falcòn. "Rivera draws heavily on Catholic religious imagery to redraw a fantasy world where the blood of fallen angels have salted our seas, the moon has fled from our skies and celestials plan a war on God. In the original production, New World explored the play as a voice of the under-represented, the poor and the oppressed. It was a production which deeply resonated with our first audience. The relevance of this voice for the under-represented has not changed."

"Marisol" starts the season with one of New World Arts' largest and most talented casts and design staffs to date. During the past month, over a dozen designers and craftspeople have been creating the costumes, sets, music and visuals of Falcòn's interpretation of Rivera's script, and transforming the stage of New World Arts into a slum in the near-apocalyptic Bronx.

Local actress Cassie Greer returns to the New World Arts stage as the character of Marisol. Greer has previously headlined New World Arts performances of "Anna in the Darkness," "Lysistrata," and "Hello and Goodbye."

"As the opener of Season Ten," said Greer, "a season focused on examining human community, 'Marisol' is telling the story of human community at its point of destruction into its rebirth, addressing the importance of a people empowered, free of limiting societal structures, united in community with each other and with the heavenly realm. It is a celebration of language, imagery, sound - an incredibly artistic show that challenges the entire production crew to think critically as well as artistically about the work we are doing, allowing us to develop and expand our abilities as actors and designers."

The season opener also brings some new faces to the New World Arts stage, including Jessica Hage, playing across from Greer as the character of June. "Reading the script, I don't want it to end. I want to read more, I want there to be a solution," said Hage. "But I think you must take your own solution, interpretation, and peace of mind from the story."

"The message I derive from 'Marisol' is that, no matter who we are or what our status is in society, we have to pull together and help one another. The structures of our jobs or what religion we follow do not necessarily define us," she added.

During their rehearsal and design process, the cast and designers of 'Marisol' have documented their progress on the New World Arts' blog web site, blog.newworldarts.org. Each member has put in their thoughts on the discussions of religion, power and identity as they have parsed the script during the last few weeks.

Falcòn, looking over his notes and some of the recent blog posts observed, "Marisol is us. She is every homeless person on the street, every believer in a church, every voter at the polls. Through her journey we can take a look at our own lives."

"It's a wonderful bookend to an exciting ten years in existence, and a play which speaks to the diverse Goshen community."

Performances of "Marisol" at New World Arts are scheduled for February 22-24, 29 and March 1-2; curtain times on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.; Sundays at 3 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 general admission, $10 for students and seniors.
