July 1, 2008 GOSHEN, INDIANA – New World Arts will present the classic Thornton Wilder play Our Town on July 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 at their mainstage in downtown Goshen. Directed by Laura Gouin, the production is set in a fictional New England town at the turn of the twentieth century and follows the lives of two young people, played by Jaron Kennel and Jessica Hage.

An unusual choice for New World Arts, which has become known within the community for choosing experimental and new works, Gouin insists Our Town is the perfect choice for this season.

“New World Arts Season Ten is focused on community, how could we not do Our Town?” asks Gouin. “And as far as experimental plays go, this one is hugely experimental. We’re performing it with no set, no props, and universal costumes. It’s a big challenge for our actors.”

“And the message of the play is poignant. It speaks of the beauty of life and asks us to take the time to look at one another and connect,” continues Gouin.

Written as a response to contemporary theater of the time and featuring minimal scenery, props and costume changes, Our Town relies heavily on pantomime and dialogue. Since its premiere in 1938, Our Town has become one of the most frequently produced plays from an American playwright.

There will also be a student juried art show focusing on the theme “Our Town” open to all middle and high school students in Elkhart County. There will be an opening night reception on Friday July 18 at 7:00 p.m. with cash awards being given to the top three artists. All accepted art work will be on display during the run of Our Town. Cash prizes for the top three artists have been generously donated by Goshen Community Bank.
