GOSHEN, Ind. — New World Arts opens the second show of their season ten with Dirty Hands by Jean-Paul Sartre.
One of Sartre’s lesser known works, Dirty Hands calls into question what it means to be a patriot or terrorist in a time of war.
The play, set in the semi-mythical land of Illyria, centers around Hugo, an idealistic and passionate young man who is frustrated by the corruption of his world. He joins the “party” to combat these wrongs and finds himself on a difficult assignment. Will he be able to dirty his hands for a cause in which he believes so strongly? And what about the party leader Hoederer who as a realist, believes it’s far easier to change the system then to change the people?
“This play is very timely considering the state of the world,” says Geoffrey Owens (playing Hoederer). “We live in a world of shoot first and damn the questions. Unfortunately in such a world, the merits of any particular argument are secondary to how fanatically its followers adhere to it.”
“With New World Arts milestone season focused on community, this play is a perfect fit, says Artistic Director Laura Gouin. “In Dirty Hands, we see a war torn country where people are separated by their ideals. Each struggles to be heard while desperately trying to find a community and a home for their ideals.”
Performances of "Dirty Hands" at New World Arts are scheduled for April 18, 19, 25, 26 at 8:00 p.m. & April 20, 27 at 3:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 general admission, $10 for students and seniors.
