New World Announces Shows for Their Historic 'Season Ten'
GOSHEN, Ind. — At their season launch party this evening in Downtown Goshen, New World Arts announced a historical milestone in the small theatre's history: Season Ten. In between sets of Grand Rapids' band Ben and Bruno, and after eating hors d'oeuvres and mingling, special events coordinator Cassie Greer and artistic director Laura Gouin took the stage and announced what performing and visual art the theatre is planning to bring to downtown Goshen in the coming year.
"We have been known for performing theatre that you wouldn’t typically find in a town of this size. Theatre that looks through the lens of other’s perspectives and challenges us to live a better life," said Gouin to a packed audience in the New World Arts "flex" space. "I thought long and hard about what message I wanted to deliver in our milestone Season Ten. I wanted to honor our past while still looking towards our future. And in these troubled times, I am concerned about our future and our community... So our season will focus on community and ask the question, 'What if we treated our most distant countries as if they were our neighbor?'"
Season Ten starts on February 22nd with the opening of "Marisol" by José Rivera, directed by New World Arts board member Bryan Falcòn. Following "Marisol" is the United Stats premiere of "Landscape with Weapon," opening April 18th and directed by Goshen College senior Samuel Yoder.
The summer will mark opening a play so seemingly-traditional, one wouldn't expect to find it on the New World Arts stage. "Our Town," Thornton Wilder's commentary on the ephemeral nature of life, opens on July 18. The director will be announced later in the season.
Rounding out Season Ten is the first musical staged at New World Arts in years. Urinetown: The Musical, a satire on over-zealous governments which has been nominated for over 10 Tonys, opens October 10th and is directed by Carrie Lee Bland-Kendall. After Urinetown, New World Arts will close the season by finishing the trilogy it started with the 2005 staging of "Ismene" and the 2006 staging of "Antigone." "Electra" by Jeremy Menekseoglu opens December 5th and follows the story of a wayward Greek Chorus. "Electra" will be directed by Laura Gouin.
New World Arts' will also continue its very popular line of secondary programming in 2008, alongside Season Ten. The annual 24/7 Theatre Festival, during which playwrights, directors and actors create a short play in 24 hours, is scheduled for January 26. 24/7's film equivalent, the 24/5 Film Festival, will be scheduled later in the year.
2008 also marks the return of the Live. concert series. This semi-formal evening at New World Arts spotlights local musicians in a cozy atmosphere with served coffee and dessert. Live. concerts are currently schedule for April 5, June 21 and September 20.
Other events such as gallery openings and other concerts will be scheduled through out the year and will be announced on New World Arts' web site.
Season Ten is New World Arts' most accessible season in recent history to aspiring actors and designers. "There's never been a better time to be involved here," said New World Arts art director Daniel Palmer. "With all the energy people are pouring into this theatre, and with a season that requires a broad range of actors, this is the perfect time to get on stage, or to think about designing a show, regardless if you have before or not." Season auditions take place Saturday, January 19. Walk-ins will be accepted, but registration is highly encouraged at www.newworldarts.org. Interested actors should bring a 2 minute monologue, and those interested in "Urinetown: The Musical" should prepare a piece from musical theatre.
Season tickets also went on sale tonight at the New World Arts box office, giving those in attendance a special 10% discount of the $45 ticket price. Season tickets may be purchased through the year at the New World Arts box office or by visiting www.newworldarts.org/tickets.
The public is also invited to visit the New World Arts blogs and podcast on New World Arts web site. Each season show is given a blog for actors, directors and designs to post on and ask for public feedback. For the past two years, the theatre has used it's podcast to distribute mp3s of concerts, festival videos and theatrical trailers online. The podcast can be subscribed to in the iTunes Store (search for "New World Arts Podcast") or online at newworldarts.org/podcast/.
